A student was raped and another stabbed on the university's Second Avenue Campus last night.

The students were attacked inside a computer laboratory. It's reported one of the women tried to call for help through Facebook.

The university says the two students are receiving the necessary support - including counselling - following the ordeal.

Students have been demonstrating at the university today.

The SRC's Babalwa Vena says they don't feel safe on the university's campuses - particularly around exam time.

"Whether you're male or female - you're not safe. There are students who reside there - they study until 3am and they walk back to campus. Every year, instances like this continue happening but there's no improvement in terms of the security of the institution," she says.
