NIC to mark 125th anniversary
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The ANC in KZN will mark the 125th anniversary of the founding of the Natal Indian Congress in Durban today.
The ceremony will be held at City Hall.
This after President Cyril Ramaphosa made special mention of the milestone in his January 8 statement.
The organisation was founded in 1894.
ANC provincial chairperson Sihle Zikalala will speak at the event, while Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan will share the platform at the request of the NIC veterans.
Former member - Maggy Govender says the event aims to foster non-racialism.
"Particularly young people need to understand that our non-racial struggle is one where various communities have been involved and the so-called 'Indian' community did play its role as well," she says, "We find quite often that young people - more than society - don't understand our history and so this is part of getting people to understand our common, shared history".
