Nhlanhla Nene has been honoured by the Mangosuthu University of Technology.
The former finance minister was conferred with the Fellowship of the university this morning during a graduation ceremony.
It was awarded by the university's Faculty of Accounting and Public Management in recognition for his contribution in the finance field and government sector.
Speaking about the honour from MUT, Nene said he was truly honoured and grateful.
"One never thinks that anybody ever notices the little contribution that you make; the energy that you put into whatever it is that you do. Of course, working in a collective as I did and also taking advantage of the fundamentals that have been put in place for us since the advent of our democracy, this is the one area that is most challenging even to this date - making sure that the finances of the country are steered in the right direction. Therefore I am truly honoured and grateful," he said.
The award comes as Nene, who was unexpectedly fired as the head of Treasury by President Jacob Zuma in December, has been appointed a non-executive director on the board of Allan Gray.
