NHI Bill needs extensive revision, warns SAMA
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
The South African Medical Association has cautioned Parliament to think twice before giving the National Health Insurance Bill its stamp of approval.
The contentious bill, which seeks to achieve universal healthcare, was passed by the National Assembly in June.
It's being brought before the National Council of Provinces for consideration at its plenary sitting on Wednesday afternoon.
However, members of the healthcare industry, as well as business groups, have raised concerns about the NHI bill being passed in its current form.

SAMA's acting chairperson, Sizeka Maweya, says funding is one issue.
"We acknowledge the importance of the NHI Bill in advancing South Africa towards universal health coverage; however, it is our responsibility to question the public and the government about the need for extensive revision to ensure the bill's success.
"SAMA stands to collaborate with all stakeholders to address the identified challenges and to work towards a healthcare system that truly meets the needs of all South Africans."
