NFP wants Ramaphosa to intervene in Nehawu strike
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The National Freedom Party (NFP) is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in the ongoing Nehawu-led national strike in order to avoid a total system collapse.
The union representing health workers has been protesting for close to a week over a 10% wage demand, among other things.
In some provinces, including in KZN, protestors are targeting hospitals and other health facilities with reports of disruptions and intimidation of staff and patients emerging.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla also confirmed that preliminary information indicates that four lives have been lost due to the strike.
The NFP's Canaan Mdletshe says the president has to put a stop to the strike before it extends to the upcoming EFF national shutdown.
"Our fear is that should this strike continue for the whole of next week until the 20th where the EFF is planning a national shutdown, South Africa is definitely going to collapse. We are saying everything must be done to prevent this strike from continuing because if it continues unabated clearly the 20th of March will demonstrate that the people of this country are prepared to collapse South Africa.
“Therefore we are saying the president must intervene and his government must intervene."
