NFP may take legal action over 'defamatory' email
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The NFP says while it's trying to verify whether an email allegedly written by its Treasurer who's been missing in action is indeed from him, it has sent the letter to its legal team as the party feels it contains serious allegations.
The email was from a Xolani Ndlovu and sent to various media houses with an explanation of what led to the party missing a deadline to pay the Independent Electoral Commission resulting in the NFP being disqualified from the elections.
In it, the writer accepts responsibility for the blunder, claiming to have been stressed by death threats they'd received over the candidate lists that were to be submitted to the IEC.
The author of the email denies being bribed to deliberately delay paying the deposit and also insists they did not lie about having paid the money when asked about it.
NFP spokesperson, Bheki Gumbi says they are shocked by the contents of the email.
"Although a person responsible is talking of an innocent mistake - that's fine, anybody can make a mistake. But I still insist we were told in the meeting that everything is done and the payment is done," he said.
This week, the NFP said it had come across new evidence which will force the IEC to put them back on the ballot paper.
The IEC yesterday confirmed that it had been approached them with this new information.
