Newborn baby rescued from pit toilet south of Durban

A newborn baby girl who was left for dead in a pit latrine has been rescued by community members in Umlazi, south of Durban.
Yesterday, residents of H-Section helped lower another resident into the toilet to get the infant out.
Officers from the SAPS Search and Rescue Unit, along with trainees from the newly formed eThekwini Metro Police's Search and Rescue Unit later responded to the scene.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says Umlazi officers are now looking for the child's mother.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says Umlazi officers are now looking for the child's mother.
"Members of the community alerted police after they found the four-day-old baby in the toilets. Officers arrived at the scene and the child was taken to hospital for treatment," he said.
