This will see previously disadvantaged suppliers being integrated into the main stream economy.

Speaking in Durban today, Economic Development MEC Sihle Zikalala told farmers from across the province that provincial departments such as Health, Education and Social Development will now also be sourcing food supplies from local black farmers.

Zikalala says they are working on getting the private sector on board.

He says talks have already begun with the retail sector and hospitality industry.

"We can confirm that hotels in eThekwini have confirmed that they will participate in this programme. This includes hotels such as Tsogo Sun, big retail companies such as Game and Mass Mart, to participate in this programme," he said.

Zikalala says President Jacob Zuma is expected to lead the official launch of the programme in Ixopo next week.
