New IEC chair Vuma Mashinini commits to role

Newly-appointed Independent Electoral Commission chairperson, Vuma Mashinini says he has no illusions about the weight of his new position.

Mashishini was this week announced by the Presidency as Pansy Tlakula's replacement, who resigned last September after the Public Protector found she had not adhered to procurement regulations in securing a R320-million lease deal for the IEC’s headquarters in Centurion.
Mashinini is a former special projects advisor to President Jacob Zuma.
He addressed the media in Pretoria today, shortly after he was formally appointment as a commissioner.
"I'm all too aware of the weight of responsibilities and expectations I'm entrusted with which are integral to this position.
"I'm ready, willing and able to discharge my responsibilities with professionalism, integrity and commitment to our country and all its citizens," he said.
