SANAC says the committee's given positive feedback on the Dapivirine Vaginal Ring as an HIV prevention tool.

The silicone ring - which will expand HIV prevention options for women - releases ARV medicine over 28 days in the body.

SANAC says Europe's approval will help pave the way for its rollout.

The council's said in a statement that Dapivirine will be especially helpful to women who cannot negotiate for safe sex.

It says the youth, who are hardest hit by HIV/ AIDS in South Africa, will also benefit.

The ring was tested on more than 3 000 young women in two studies in four African countries, including SA.
