Deputy mayor, Fawzia Peer briefed the media on some of the city's safety plans for the upcoming holidays yesterday.

Thousands of holidaymakers from across the country will flock to Durban for the end-of-year break in the coming days and weeks.

"We have about 83 additional contract security deployments. Bathing hours will also be extended to 19-hours," she said.

Peer says they have had to rethink their traditional programme because of the influx of visitors to our shores over the December and January holidays.

"We have additional lifeguards, about 92 now. We also have separated child programmes. There will be more than 30 child-minders, and every child will get wristbands," she says.

The mayor is expected to launch the Festive Season Management Plan soon.

Meanwhile, matrics have already begun their annual migration to the coast following the final exams.

Organisers of the 2017 Rage Festival expect about 20,000 people to attend events scheduled for Umhlanga and Ballito.
