'New federation could challenge Cosatu policies'
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
Labour analyst, Terry Bell says its about time we have another trade union federation that can challenge COSATU and get it away from being bureaucratic or concerned about positions.
Bell's been speaking as metalworkers union, Numsa and scores of other labour unions have had the formation of a new and relevant federation at the top of the agenda both on Saturday during the first ever Workers Summit and at their May Day rally on Sunday.
He says Cosatu should be worried as this is an inevitable move by those who left the federation.
"I think they are desperately worried. If not, that would be very foolish because the point is that they have stuck to their guns and staying in the exact same position where they made it perfectly clear that they're not budging from their previous policy of sticking together as the South African Communist Party, the ANC and Cosatu. So, it's an inevitable move," he said.
Cosatu believes the planned federation will divide workers further.
