New eThekwini mayor vows to put residents first
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
eThekwini's new mayor has vowed to place the needs of the residents first.

Cyril Xaba was elected unopposed on Wednesday in a full council sitting at the Durban ICC.
Moments after the mayoral chain was placed around his neck, Xaba promised to work towards improving the city's water and sanitation infrastructure, and to ensure uninterrupted water supply to residents.
"I shall be following up on other areas that have been without water for a considerable period, and I will treat this as urgent."
He says he'll also be on top of other service delivery issues.
"In the next few days, we will be meeting with all service delivery units to streamline our plans to clean the city, rehabilitate our roads, fix streetlights, maintain our sports facilities and parks, build houses, and deal with water and sewer leakages.

"From these engagements, we will be able to develop new approaches to accelerate service delivery."
Xaba has called on employees to recommit to serving the public.
"We must state unequivocally that we will not tolerate people who do not want to work and those who pursue their self-interests at the expense of the people of eThekwini. We will monitor the performance of senior management to ensure that it is aligned to the objectives and key performance indicators that underpin our IDP."
He's also backed the team sent to get eThekwini back on track under the Section 154 intervention.
