The African National Congress' Cyril Xaba was elected as the new mayor of eThekwini on Wednesday.

Xaba has served as an MPL in KZN and is the province's previous MEC for Agriculture.
He was elected unopposed in a full council meeting at the Durban ICC on Wednesday afternoon.
He steps into the role after former mayor Mxolisi Kaunda was recalled by the ANC and redeployed to the NCOP.

In his inaugural mayoral address, Xaba said he is determined to fix the municipality.
"I assure you of my total commitment to collaborate with all political parties and stakeholders to make this city work for its residents. Once again, I extend my sincere thanks to the ANC, the leadership of this beautiful City and the staff in my office. I wish to extend my appreciation to my wife and children for their support.
"Working together, we can do more to grow this city and ensure that we leave no one behind."
