The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) says it's preparing to defend itself in court after the energy regulator and government were slapped with a lawsuit over plans to build more coal-fired power stations.

Environmentalists argue that cleaner and less harmful renewable energy would be a better and cheaper alternative to new coal power.

The government's plans to construct 1 500 megawatts of coal-fired power are contained in its integrated resource plan aimed at ensuring a stable power supply for the future.

Nersa's Charles Hlebela has confirmed their lawyers have received the papers.

"We can confirm that Nersa did receive the court papers, but I must indicate that we are not in a position to comment further as this matter is before the court."
