NERSA green lights 9.6% electricity price hike

South Africans can expect electricity prices to go up in April and July.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has approved 9.61% tariff increase for Eskom - almost half of what was power utility had applied for.
It include the revenue amount Eskom has been allowed to recover from previous years.
It had put in a request for a tariff hike of 20.5%.

National Energy Regulator chairperson Nhlanhla Gumede they've had to make a fair decision.
"This again was done as a balancing act which is done to balance the interests taking into account the state of our economic recovery balancing the interests on the economy and that of the consumers as well balancing the interests of the utility."
NERSA says it will approve the retail tariffs that Eskom calculates before the middle of next month.
