Nene: "No mission more important than stabilizing SARS"
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene says the SARS inquiry and disciplinary action against its Commissioner Tom Moyane are part of efforts put in place to stabilize SARS.
Nene delivered the keynote address at the official opening of the 2018 SARS tax season.
He says SARS’ credibility needs to be restored without fear or favor.
"There can be no mission more important than stabilising and restoring SARS into an institution that is capable in the eyes of the South African public," he says, "SARS is key to social development. We want SARS to do its work without fear, favour or prejudice and to do so optimally".
In a submission made on Friday, advocate Dali Mpofu - acting on behalf of Moyane - objected to the commission of inquiry, saying it was unfair.
But head of the commission, Judge Robert Nugent, says they will plough on.
