Thousands of members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) are set to embark on day one of their strike across South Africa on Thursday morning.

Their demands include that all Community Healthcare Workers (CHW) be permanently employed by the national department of health.

Nehawu spokesperson, Khaya Xaba, says close to 80 000 workers are set to be part of the protests expected to kick off at 10am on Thursday.

Xaba says they will deliver their memorandums in 8 provinces at district healthcare offices, excluding Gauteng.

"These workers have been patient enough wit government and we feel that it is about time government takes them seriously," says Xaba.

The union has given government seven days to respond to their demands or face threats by workers to render the healthcare sector ungovernable.
