Nehawu to challenge interdict against protesting farm workers
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Workers' union Nehawu is preparing a court battle against Mjindi Farming in Jozini after the company was granted a court interdict preventing workers from continuing with their protected strike.
Workers have returned to work after downing tools for only a day on Monday over a 15% wage increase.
The government-owned Mjindi Farming which provides services to the farming community has upped its offer from an initial 2% to 7.
The company's CEO Masango Sifundza says the company was granted a court interdict.
''We believe they are an essential service and the court interdict that was granted. They have submitted their grievances to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development,'' he said.
Nehawu's provincial secretary Phakama Ndunakazi says they reject the offer currently on the table.
''We support 7% if the employer is the position to engage the union on other issues that we have raised. We're heading to the Labour Court to advance our debate,'' he said.
