NEF green lights R1bn fund for unrest-hit businesses

A year after the devastating July unrest, more than R1 billion has been approved by the National Empowerment Fund to help affected SMMEs in KZN and Gauteng to recover.

It's in partnership with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition and the Solidarity Fund's Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund.
They say the relief is set to save close to 10 000 jobs.

The NEF's regional manager for KZN Phakamile Mandonsela says their teams have visited various areas, from Jozini to Ugu.
Teams interacted with owners whose business operations were disrupted or targeted during the riots.
"We have looked at your micro-businesses - that person who was working on the street corner. We have also looked at corporatism in rural areas such as Mooi River."

"We have looked at many micro-businesses as well to be able to ensure that they also have their livelihoods saved and they are able to get back an inter-operation."
