National taxi strike called off - for now

The national taxi strike planned for next week, has been provisionally called off.
The South African National Taxi Council, Santaco, says the strike has been called off pending the outcomes of a meeting with Transport minister Joe Maswanganyi on Friday.
Taxi drivers were expected to shut down the country's roads on Wednesday 12 July.
Traffic was gridlocked on all major routes in Gauteng during last month's shutdown.

Santaco spokesperson Thabisho Molelekwa: "We have suspended the strike pending the outcomes of our discussions. We also want to provide possible solutions to the minister on how best we can make public transport efficient."
Taxi drivers are protesting among others - escalating vehicle prices and drivers being blacklisted.
