National Taxi Alliance wants Mantashe to ease fuel levies
The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) has written to the Department of Minerals and Energy on the issue of fuel levies.
It wants government to look at ways in which it can ease fuel levies in the wake of a series of sharp price hikes.
The call by the NTA comes after the taxi industry increased their fares by between 25%-30% due the rising fuel costs.
Spokesperson Theo Malele says that the government should be sensitive and consider their proposal.
“In that letter we are pressing that the government should be sensitive that the taxi industry that creates 400 000 indirect and direct employment cannot be allowed to go under because it is the only biggest public transport mover.

“And our proposal is that the levies be relaxed or removed. We are still awaiting their response.”
The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen oil prices around the world rise to unprecedented levels this year.
Motorists are currently paying R26.70/ l of petrol while diesel is at R27.33/l.
