National shutdown: KZN taxi operators urged to exercise caution

The taxi council issued guidelines on the precautionary measures that can be taken during the EFF's planned shutdown. 

"If people block the road, then they should take precautions of ensuring that the commuter's safety is prioritised and well as the vehicle's. They rather utilise alternative routes or stop operating within those areas which properly will be deemed to be volatile," says the chairperson of Santaco in KZN, Sfiso Shangase. 

On Thursday, the council and the National Taxi Alliance confirmed they won't be taking part in Monday's shutdown.

Shangase says they have been told that the protests will be peaceful. 

"We know how protests are governed in the country. We tend to think that those who will not be participating will be given their space and their rights will be protected by the law enforcement agencies and on that premise, we are moving from as the mini-bus for now. It's going to be a peaceful protest."   

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa's warned that security forces would protect the country from "disorder and anarchy".
