National, provincial govts owe R10bn:Treasury
Updated | By Bulletin
The National Treasury says over R10 billion in invoices from the last financial year remain unpaid by national and provincial governments.
It says despite laws mandating payment within 30 days, more than 1,400 invoices are overdue.
Chief director Moipone Ramoipone has named the Departments of Justice and of Public Works as the worst offenders.
She says misfiled invoices and cash-flow problems are factors.
Ramoipone is recommending disciplinary action and heightened oversight to deal with the delays.
"At a provincial level they contribute 70 per cent of unpaid invoices, whilst at national level it is at 30 per cent. All checks and balances are crucial to reduce the risk.”
