The current set of regulations are valid until June 12.

In a statement, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the meeting will be followed by the President's Coordinating Council and Cabinet.

"The meeting will assess developments in the Covid-pandemic in the country and the national response to this challenge. The Council’s deliberations come towards the end of a two-week period during which the country has implemented alert level 4 of the coronavirus national state of disaster,"

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor Mosa Moshabela, says he does not expect an extension of level 4.

He says the purpose of the two-week restrictions was to address the situation in Gauteng with numbers seeming to be out of control.

"To a large extent as a circuit breaker, I think that level four has worked, especially now that we see the curve is turning in Gauteng so I would say in that sense it has worked.

"A realistic expectation is that the command council will consider whether to stay at level four for another week or to move to adjusted level 3.

"In fact, there is no reason we should stay at level four, we should move to level 3 because it will kind of help the rest of the country breathe a bit in terms of restaurants and those kinds of things.

“I would say adjusted level 3 is an outcome we are most likely to see from Monday.”
