Nathi Mthethwa to review controversial R22 million flag project
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has done an about-turn on his department's controversial flag project.
He's ordered a review of the R22 million proposal.
"The Minister of Sports and Culture has directed his department to review the process related to the monumetal flay in it's totality," says the department's Masechaba Khumalo.
The department's plan to erect a 100-metre tall flag in Pretoria, meant to foster national unity.
It triggered backlash with groups and members of the public calling it wasteful spending, saying the money can be put to better use.
Khumalo says they welcome the myriad responses they've received to what's she's called an important heritage project.
"Over the past few days the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture has followed and taken note of public discourse that has unfolded in respect of the envisaged Monumental Flag.
"The diversity of voices around this important heritage project are a welcome celebration of our country's vibrant constitutional democracy and the freedoms that must be upheld beyond posterity."
