Naptosa calls for psychologists at all schools
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
National teacher's association - Naptosa is calling for the Education Department to create posts for educational psychologists at all schools in the country.
This is one of several motions that members deliberated on at a conference in Durban yesterday.
The association's Anthony Pierce says there is a general lack of psychological support in schools, adding that teaching staff are not trained or qualified to execute psychological intervention.
Pierce says having an educational psychologist on site will be beneficial to pupils who need help but can't afford it.
"Post 1994 there has been a death of school psychologists and it is incumbent up on the state to ensure that every school has a psychologist. The need is great - aside from doing assessments psychologists are also in a position to indicate to children directions they could explore once they have completed Grade 12," he said.
