Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says Namibia has promised to add more megawatts to our grid for the next three years.

Ramokgopa visited Namibia last Friday, and met with Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo.

He gave feedback on Sunday during his weekly briefing on the Energy Action Plan.

"There's a gas project that provides a tangible solution to energy deficit both in the region and in South Africa. The indication there is 400 megwatts of gas power could be available by 2026, they are prepared to ramp that up to about 600 megawatts for as long as they can."

Ramokgopa said the additional megawatts will go a long way.

"This part of our efforts to ensure that we are able to inform the transition and lower the carbon admissions. The amount of fossil fuels, as we move to coal, we are able to draw from gas resources so we are able to have a signficant amount of certainty relating to the future.

"That's that why we address them now we need to build significant capacity for South African economy going into the future."

Earlier this year, Mozambique also agreed to provide South Africa with electricity.
