N3 shut at Van Reenen’s Pass after trucks torched
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The N3 Toll Concession is advising motorists
travelling on the N3 toll routes to expect delays as Van Reenen Pass remains
closed.
Six trucks were set alight in the early hours of Sunday.
The motive behind the arson attack on the heavy-duty carriers is still unclear.
KZN SAPS spokesperson Jay Naicker says the truck drivers were accosted by armed men who ordered them out of the vehicles.
"No injuries were reported. Van Reenen detectives are investigating a case of malicious damage to property.
"A large police deployment, including the Public Order Policing Unit, is monitoring the situation," said Naicker.
N3TC's operations manager, Thania Dhoogra says clean-up operations are underway.
"The N3 Toll Route is currently closed in the area. Northbound traffic heading to Johannesburg is being stopped at Tugela Plaza, while southbound traffic heading to Durban is stacked at the top of Van Reenen Pass," Dhoogra said.
She says efforts are being made to reopen the route as soon as it is safe to do so.
"All authorities and emergency services are on scene. They have secured the area and the fires have been doused."
