KwaZulu-Natal's road network will get another major boost when the Ashburton Interchange Project gets underway.

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga officiated the sod-turning ceremony of the R2,4 billion project in uMsunduzi on Tuesday.
It is part of an ongoing multi-phase operation that looks to expand the N2 and N3 highways.

Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi says this will result in increased and efficient logistical flow between Durban's harbour and the rest of the country as well as the SADC nations.
"The N3, as you know, as you go towards Maritzburg it is quite a huge bottleneck. This N3 in particular is not safe, there is an issue of flooding so we have had to expand the lanes. We are going to add to this programme.
"But we are going to have got get to Pietermaritzburg bottleneck because that is where there is a huge problem and that we are going to consult about R8 billion, but for now we are focusing on this stretch Ashburton."
