Sanral says upgrades on the N2 at the Umhlali and Umvoti River Bridges on the N2 has begun meaning travellers can expect delays.
The national roads agency says the roadworks expected to last a year will be carried out in both directions of the highway at the northern ends of the Umhlali and Umvoti River Bridges.
It says only the fast lane will be open over a two kilometre stretch while work is done on the slow lane.
Once the slow lane is complete it will be opened to traffic and the fast lane will then be blocked off for its rehabilitation.
For the first stage of the road works only the northbound carriage way will be affected at the two bridges.
Once work on this carriageway is complete, work will begin in the southbound lanes.
Sanral is urging motorists to adhere to the temporary speed limit of 40km per hour or consider alternative routes.
It's apologised for the inconvenience.
