UPDATE: N2 reopened near Sibaya

The helicopter transporting the injured man to hospital has since taken off. The N2 southbound carriageway in the vicinity of Sibaya Casino, north of Durban had to be closed earlier to allow for the helicopter to land.

The N2 southbound carriageway has been closed in the vicinity of Sibaya Casino, north of Durban to allow for a helicopter to land before airlifting a man to hospital.

Emergency services say the pedestrian, believed to be about 30-years-old, was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross the freeway.

Netcare911's Chris Botha says he sustained critical injuries and has has been placed on an ventilator.

Botha says the man will be airlifted by a Red Cross helicopter to a specialised hospital in Durban for further medical care.
