N1 assault: Eight VIP officers unmasked in court
Updated | By Newswatch
The faces of the eight VIP Protection Unit officers accused of involvement in the assault of motorists in a highway in Johannesburg have been revealed in court for the first time.
The group was back in the dock in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday, unmasked.
The group, which was previously attached to Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s security detail, was taken into custody after a video emerged showing the occupants of a car being attacked on the N1 earlier this year.
Previously, the court had ruled the accused could attend proceedings with their faces hidden as an identity parade was yet to be conducted.
Following Thursday's brief appearance, the matter was postponed to May for trial processes.
The NPA says it remains confident it has a strong case.
The officers are back at work, but their duties are said to be limited to desk work.
