MUT student dies after being struck by lightning

Mangosuthu University of Technology has confirmed a student has died after being struck by lightning during a storm in Durban.
It says Mpumezi Mndwetywa was asleep in his room at the external university residence in Glenwood on Friday night when the lightning struck.
The third-year mechanical engineering student suffered burn injuries.
Some of the rooms on the third floor of the residence also caught fire.

The institution says students are being offered counselling.
At the same time, disaster management in eThekwini is said to be out in areas affected by the weekend's destructive weather.
Electrical infrastructure was damaged in Clermont, while landslides and fallen trees have also been reported in other parts of Durban.
City spokesperson Gugu Sisilana says mop-up operations are underway.
"This morning, the disaster management team set out to assess the extent of the damage, noting that affected areas included Ward 39, Ward 30 and 34.
"Team from the Park Recreational and Culture units had their hands full since the early hours of the morning clearing trees that had fallen on roads. This resulted in traffic being blocked."
