Murdered officers remembered in Umlazi

KZN police along with religious groups and the eThekwini Municipality are holding a mass prayer service at the King Zwelithini stadium in Umlazi, in memory of officers killed in the line of duty.

The police's Vishnu Naidoo says a total of 55 officers have been killed in the country since the beginning of the year, eight more than last year for the same period of time.

He has called on communities to take a stand against the attacks, adding that investigations into these killings are a priority.

Meanwhile, police in KwaZulu-Natal have confirmed that an off duty police officer has taken her own life at the Kingsway Hospital today. 

The female officer had gone to visit her daughter around 5am this morning and the incident is believed to have happened shortly thereafter. 

The police's Thulani Zwane says is is suspected that she took her own life. 

"She went to visit her child who got burnt a week ago and admitted to hospital. It is alleged that she shot herself and died instantly. An inquest has been opened by the Amanzimtoti police for further investigation," he said.
