Murder of women at ANC Inanda meeting an act of intimidation: Kodwa
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
State Security Deputy Minister Zizi Kodwa says the murder of three women attending an African National Congress (ANC) meeting in Inanda over the weekend, was nothing more than an act of intimidation.
He was speaking on Tuesday outside the Buhlebethu Primary School in the area where the women were killed on Saturday.
Gunmen in a black bakkie opened fire on a group of people before speeding off.
Five others were injured.
Kodwa joined Police Minister Bheki Cele to receive feedback from the local police on the murders.
He says the killings are an attack on democratic order.
"It's an attack to the constitution because this is are people who are exercising their rights in terms of the constitution to elect a leader of their choice and to participate in the election which will strengthen democracy.
"So the attack is nothing else but to weaken a system of democracy. We'd like to make a call on behalf of JCPS that perhaps have if you have seen we have been working over the weekend in areas such as Western Cape and Tshwane we'd want to encourage our people not to be intimated by these incidences.
“The JCPS will be working out a plan to make sure that we protect these elections, not just protecting political parties but we are protecting the system because it is important that we guard the system against these acts of intimidation.
“It's unfortunate that people coming here, to exercise as guaranteed by the constitution of the republic, lost their lives.”
