Municipality responds to DA's criticism of Durban mayor
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
eThekwini has hit back at the Democratic Alliance in the municipality - saying the opposition party is jealous of the leadership shown by Mayor Zandile Gumede.
The mayor's office has been responding to the DA's report on Gumede's first year at the helm of the City.
DA caucus leader in eThekwini, Zwakele Mncwango says the municipality's on the brink of collapsing.
He's accused eThekwini of prioritising lavish spending on social functions instead of focusing on service delivery.
He says this makes it difficult for councillors to perform their duties.
"If the municipality decides to go and spent R95-million on an event instead of giving the money to a councillor who is complaining about issues in the ward - that is a serious issue we are facing," he said.
The mayor is expected to hold a press briefing next week - she's expected to reflect on the achievements and challenges over the past year.
