Municipality to assist with funerals for drowned Umlalazi teens

Support will be offered to the families of three teenagers who drowned during heavy rains and flooding, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, earlier this week. The Umlalazi local municipality says it will assist the families of Nontethelelo Mcanyana, Sinikiwe Mpanza and Zenande Gumede with their funeral arrangements.

The boys - aged between 14 and 18-years-old - drowned trying to cross the Matimofu River, after school, on Wednesday.

The municipality's Mkhuseli Buthelezi says his offices have been in contact with their families but that they do not want to impose.

“We are waiting for them to have their own family meetings and then write to us to tell us exactly how we can help,” he explains, “We do not want to take over the entire funeral, but rather for them to let us know when and where we are needed”.

A cold front earlier this week swept through the country, bringing with it low temperatures.

Strong winds and showers were experienced on the coast.

Inland, heavy snow fell at the top of Sani Pass, on the KZN and Lesotho border, and the province’s northern regions experienced flash flooding.
