Municipalities record R7 bn increase in wasteful expenditure

Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu says South African municipalities have incurred irregular expenditure of R32 billion for the 2018/19 financial year.

Makwetu released the report on Wednesday.
"Last year, you will note when we noted irregular expenditure it was at about R25 billion across local government. For this year that figure is sitting at about R32 billion which is an additional R7 billion," he says.
Only 20 municipalities across the country, mostly in Gauteng and the Western Cape, recorded clean audits.

This amounts to only 8% of municipalities countrywide.
The North West fared the worst with not a single clean audit.
Makwetu lamented the fact that municipalities spent R1.2 billion on financial management consultancy but still produced poor audit outcomes.
