Municipalities irregular spend up by 75%: auditor general

Irregular and wasteful expenditure by the country's municipalities has gone up by 75% - from R16.2-billion to R28.3-billion.

The Auditor-General's 2016/2017 audit results released in Parliament today.
Kimi Makwetu says - in general - the country's 257 municipalities have shown no signs of improvement.

45 municipalities worsened while only 16 improved.
"Irregular expenditure in 2016/2017 did not grow by that quantum that in that year. The municipalities have gone back to contracts related to expenditures in previous periods and only identified and reported on it as required by the MFMA ( Municipal Finance Management Act) in the year 2016 and 2017," he said.
