Municipal workers still locked in wage negotiations
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The country's municipal workers and the employer are still locked in wage negotiations six months after talks first got underway.
Unions are now asking for a salary increase of between eight and ten percent for workers.
They had initially demanded 15 percent.
SAMWU's Simon Mathe says they have also told the bargaining council that workers are struggling given the high cost of living.
Mathe says the situation has been compounded by the one percent VAT increase.
He says the employer is offering seven percent.
"We have agreed that we will meet again on the 6th of 7th of June. We hope that an agreement will be reached, but we will still need to consult our members," he said.
