Police Minister, Bheki Cele told reporters that the man had confessed to the crimes before taking his own life.

He made the comments outside the Umzumbe Magistrates Court on the South Coast yesterday where the suspect and his alleged co-accused were meant to make their first appearance.

The duo was taken in for questioning on last week Thursday after the fifth body of a woman was found dumped in a sugarcane field on Wednesday.

Community members gathered outside the court demanding justice for Nelisiwe Dube, Nosipho and Akhona Gumede, Zama Chiliza and one unidentified woman.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Cele said the suspect had confessed to killing four of the women - whose bodies were found in sugarcane fields over the past couple of weeks.

The man claimed he didn't know how many women he'd killed.

Cele says the information has broadened their investigations and that four new experts from Pretoria have been deployed to join the team.

"We want to make sure that we leave no stone unturned because there is new information - we might find there are more people.

"The person who confessed yesterday [Sunday] - he believes there are more people that he has murdered. There are more families that are coming up to say 'We have missed so and so' - so we cant withdraw our investigation."

Cele says officers have recovered a number of items belonging to the women who have been killed.
