Mthembu faces major challenges within ANC caucus: expert
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
A political analyst is questioning whether newly-appointed ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu has the political power to discipline members of the caucus.
Nic Borain says Mthembu has a very big challenge ahead of him.
Witbank-born Mthembu became a part of the ANC’s caucus in Parliament again following the general elections in 2014.
Borain feels that the party is in crisis with many of the members of parliament not doing their job.
"He's probably over-promising and he is likely to under-deliver because the problems are so deep that no one Chief Whip is going to be able to fix them. Remember, the ANC Chief Whip has tended to be an unstable position," he said.
Mthembu was appointed after the ruling party said earlier this month that Stone Sizani was being redeployed.
