Msimang says 1994 elections still worth celebrating

Saturday marks 30 years since the country’s first democratic elections, but not all South Africans are happy with the fruits of democracy.

ANC stalwart Mavuso Msimang says it's difficult to be optimistic about the country's future as we prepare to mark the milestone.

It also comes as the country prepares to head to the polls on 29 May - an election which could see the ANC lose its outright majority for the first time since the dawn of democracy.

Msimang recently resigned from the ANC, only to rescind the decision following a meeting with the party's secretary general, Fikile Mbalula.

He says despite the country's myriad of problems, 1994 still stands out as a beacon of hope.

"If 1994 did not exist, for me, we would have created it because of the huge change that happened between the past and the future. We discarded the past.

“We talk about things being better than they are now. For me, it’s just frustration because things are not how they are supposed to be."
