Kathrada died in March at the age of 87-years-old. A number of memorial services were held for 'Uncle Kathy' in the days and weeks following his death. A Durban memorial service for him was disrupted by the ANC Youth League in the province. The former Rivonia trialist was among the late former President Nelson Mandela's closest friends.

The ANC's Charles Nqakula described Kathrada as someone who stood up against corruption.

"As we remember Kathy Mohamed Kathrada, let us remember some of the things we need to do in order for us to truly provide the service for our people which will ensure that they enjoy a better life," he said.

The IFP's Mangosuthu Buthelezi told MPs Kathrada was a friend.

I'm honoured to have called Mr. Kathrada a friend. We became close because of our shared love for South Africa. Over eight decades, we witnessed countless milestones and endured endless hardships in the pursuit of political liberation," he said.

Pieter Mulder from the Freedom Front Plus says Kathrada taught him a lot about tolerance.

"Because we were writing the 1996 Constitution, we had weekly discussions and debates. We were forced to listen to each other and try to understand each other's viewpoints. Kathrada was a good listener and debate looking for win-win solutions," he said.
