Move to level 2 good news for businesses – economist

Efficient Group senior economist Francois Stofberg says the move to adjusted lockdown level 2 is good news for businesses and the economy.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday evening that the country will move to level 2, easing restrictions on businesses, restaurants, and the sale of alcohol.
This comes as the business sector fears a stricter lockdown amid warnings of a looming fourth wave of infections.
Stofberg says fewer restrictions will boost businesses and the economy.
“It’s always good news if we hear that there are less restrictions, because what restrictions do they reduce the flow of information, and the flow of activity, and that reduces output.
“So as soon as you reduce that, in an economic system then there will be better flow of output and a better performing economy, so it is something that we are glad about.
“It might not sound like a lot but as we continue to roll out small these small blocks for businesses there will be a positive impact on the flow of the economy.”
He agrees that another lockdown would have an even harsher impact on businesses.
“If we see another lockdown, then we will see it really having an impact on our economic performance, we saw that with the June/ July lockdown as well, we saw a bit of contraction in those month’s economic activities.”
