Motshekga postpones reopening of schools briefing
Updated | By Newswatch
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will not be briefing the nation on Thursday on the state of readiness for the reopening of schools.
In a statement released today, Motshekga says during a meeting on Monday with the provinces - it was reported that they were at different stages of readiness and requested more time.
It was agreed that one week is needed to finalise outstanding plans including awaiting deliveries of personal protection equipment.
"So on Monday (18 May) we will reconvene to consider the progress made and then report to the public on the state of readiness. A lot of work has happened and we are happy with the progress reported in the last meeting but we need confirmation of deliveries that provinces were waiting for.
“In the meeting on Monday we will receive a full report which we can then share with the public. We will also use the meeting to table President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address which is also important for our planning purposes,” she said.
According the statement the minister will address the media on Monday, with the time of the briefing being announced closer to the date.
