Motshekga cancels meeting with unions, schools to stay open
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has cancelled a meeting with teacher unions that was due to take place on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) called for schools to be shut immediately until after the country's COVID-19 peak.
Its National Executive Committee had discussed the issue amid the spike in infections. Many schools in the country have also reported coronavirus cases since reopening last month.
SADTU says learning can't take place under such disruptive conditions.

Spokesperson for the Basic Education Department, Elijah Mhlanga says the minister will be having consultations with the sector.
He expects these to be concluded by Friday.
"The minister will meet with teacher unions, SGB associations, individuals and organisations that operate within the Basic Education sector. The meetings will provide input ahead of her Cabinet meeting which is taking place a few days after that," says Mhlanga.
Mhlanga says schools will remain open until further notice.
