Motsepe to Trump: "Africa loves you"
Updated | By Andrew Robertson
Opinions have exploded on social media over a remark by South African business tycoon Patrice Motsepe at a dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump.
Before the meal, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday, the African Rainbow Minerals CEO is seen on video telling Trump, "Africa loves you".
"We do business in 50 countries, I had the honour of being one of the 100 greatest business minds - Forbes -, and it was a great honour to be with you," he gushes.
"And all we wanted to say is that Africa loves America, Africa loves you. And it's very, very important we want America to do well, we want you to do well. And the success of America is the success of the rest of the world."
He continues, "We are in mining, financial services, property, real estate, technologies very diversified. It's a great honour to be here."

His comment has been met with public outcry.
What Motsepe did was uncalled for; you can't go anywhere in the world and speak on half of an entire continent. Every country has its own President & international relations representatives that can speak for themselves

His utterances are dangerous and very irresponsible pic.twitter.com/wHTyPJirg6
Black South Africans who became Billionaires post 1994, did it at the expense of the Rest of South Africans! Basically sold out! Now they want to extend the nonsense to the rest of the continent! Patrice Motsepe DOES NOT speak on behalf of Africans. Motsepe LIED! #PatriceMotsepe

Who died & appointed Patrice Motsepe Africa’s spokesman? Someone should remind him that he’s only the National Brother-In-Law. #PatriceMotsepe #DonaldTrump pic.twitter.com/csZQ9gbTju

However, some assume it's a strategic move.
So did folks think Patrice Motsepe and Cyril Ramaphosa became billionaires in South Africa by telling racists the truth? 🤣

Whilst Ramaphosa is busy burning bridges with America, Motsepe is trying to mend them.

Our economy on its knees as it is. We need more investment from US to rebuild our economy.
This is good diplomacy.
Only those with no economics intelligence will condemn it!#PatriceMotsepe pic.twitter.com/Zny0kfdcbi
