Motorist tells of moment vehicles started to pile-up on N3

A motorist who was driving in the vicinity of the N3 accident that claimed the lives of several people has urged road users to reduce their speed and take other road rules seriously.

Seventy-eight others were hurt in Monday's multi-vehicle pile-up on the route at Hilton.

 

Several trucks, minibus taxis and cars were involved.

"I was driving last night - everything was fine on the road. But as I drove past Pietermaritzburg towards Hilton there was heavy mist - then the next thing I saw was the accident. There were two light motor vehicles and a truck that had crashed then.

 

"I managed to park my vehicle, get out and try to stop the oncoming vehicles - but they were already speeding and smashed into people and other vehicles. All I want to say it lets reduce our speed when driving. Speeding kills."

 

The Hilton Town Hall was opened to motorists and passengers who were stranded to help them recuperate.

 

Councillor Kate Janse Van Rensburg, cared for a three-month-old baby - while his family dealt with the loss of his mother and uncle.

"It was devastation. I can't imagine being a mother myself having to go through that and take on a new responsibility. 


"As a mother, community member and family member, I am very grateful that there were other members of the family around. I could go to the hospital and try and get communications by taking cellphones to granny who was there."
